Behavioural Issues and Child Development

Provides support, assessment and therapeutic services to children and their families in Ladysmith, Nanaimo, Lantzville, Gabriola Island and Protection Island areas each year
The NCDC provides specialized services for children from birth to 19 years of age. The mission is to promote optimum child development by serving children and youth with developmental needs and their families. Services are provided at home, daycare or preschool, in a community setting or at the centre.

Early Intervention Therapy (EIP): parents can self-refer to EIP by calling the centre. Professionals can refer to the programs with parent consent via the referral form.

Infant Development Program: is designed to support families to encourage their child’s developmental progression. The program supports babies from birth to 3 years who are delayed in their development (i.e. sitting unsupported, walking, talking), may be at risk for a delay in their development, are premature or multiple births, or have an identified special need.

School Age Therapy: Occupational Therapists (OTs) and Physiotherapists (PTs) provide consultation services. Consultation may include assessment, classroom and home recommendations, support adapting school activities and prescription of equipment. The OTs and PTs will collaborate with families, health care and school teams to develop Individualized Education Plans (IEP) and follow-up with necessary community supports..

Family Development: provides consultation and intervention to parents to increase knowledge and parenting skills. Serves children from birth to 6 years.

The Family Resource Navigator: helps families navigate systems and find the community resources they need. FRN also provides opportunities for parent networking, community education and funding options. No referral is needed.

Playgroup drop-in sessions: offered twice a week. No referral is needed.

Supported Child Development Program: provides support and resources to childcare programs to support the inclusion of children with developmental, physical and emotional challenges. Referrals accepted from parents or daycares.

Child and Youth Development Program: provides social skills, life skills and recreational opportunities for children and youth with special needs. Referrals through MCFD- Child and Youth with Special Needs Social Workers.
