Shelter Aid For Elderly Renters (SAFER) - Rental Supplement

Lower income seniors renting in the private market may be eligible for a rent supplement through SAFER.
The Shelter Aid for Elderly Renters (SAFER) program helps make rents affordable for BC seniors with low to moderate incomes. SAFER provides monthly cash payments to subsidize rents for eligible BC residents who are age 60 or over. Existing clients need to reapply each year.

To be eligible applicants must meet all of the following:
  • Age 60 years or older
  • Lived in BC for at least 12 months
  • Gross monthly income is less than $3,333.34 monthly or $40,000 annually, effective April 2025 (Before April, $3,103.33 monthly or $37,240 annually)
  • Pays more than 30% of their gross, before tax, monthly household income towards rent for their home. If the applicant lives in a trailer, this includes pad rental (manufactured home) that they own and live in.
  • Applicant and their spouse, with whom share a home, meet the Canadian citizenship requirements:
    • Individuals with private sponsorship that has broken down
    • People who applied for refugee status
    • Individuals legally in Canada as permanent residents, not under sponsorship
    • Canadian citizens not under sponsorship
Applications can be submitted by fax, mail or in-person. The application form is available online. Once the application has been processed, a notification will be sent by mail. For applications by mail, please address the letter to "Shelter Aid For Elderly Renters Program" on the front of the envelope.
