Immigrant Welcome Centre of Cowichan

This service supports newcomers to Canada toward their successful integration and aims to enhance intercultural awareness in the Cowichan Valley region
Settlement Sevices: Our program assists immigrants and refugees with the information and support to help settle as well as adjust to life in Canada.
Support Services Include:
  • Housing
  • Registering children in school
  • Finding a family doctor
  • Finding a job and assisting with foreign credential evaluation
  • Understanding immigration procedures and forms
  • Accessing government services and programs
  • Connecting you with other local agencies
  • Referral to English classes
  • Assistance with banking and financial information

  • Employment Services: Our employment services provide assistance with preparing a resume and cover letter, introduction to job search strategies, help with understanding the local labour market, career explorations, incremental goal setting and planning, assistance with credential recognition, information about education programs, job referrals, interview preparation, mentorship, networking, internship, job shadowing opportunities and hard and soft skills training including Canadian workplace culture and profession-specific ethics. Employment assistance is available to all those eligible to work in Canada.

    Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC): Our English classes are based on real-world English skills that students need to use in the community, at work, or to take other courses to further their education. Classes are free for all qualified permanent resident and refugee status immigrants. We also provide LINC home study for individuals that cannot attend LINC classes in person. Please contact us for more information.

    The English Language Mentoring (ELM) Program: This program offers a one-on-one learning environment and provides language training to adult newcomers. It also helps to facilitate social, cultural, economic and political integration in Canada.

    Community Outreach Programs:
    • Organizing Against Racism and Hate (OARH): This provincial program helps small communities collaboratively find ways to address incidents of racism and hate crime
    • Community Connections: This program helps newcomers gain confidence in navigating the settlement process. We help develop positive relationships between the community and newcomers through presentations, events, and outreach
    • Settlement Worker in Schools (SWIS): SWIS connects immigrant and refugee students and their families to school, community and government resources in the Cowichan Valley
    Youth Programs:
    • The Compassionate Leaders and Youth Ambassadors Program: These programs help youths learn about diversity and works towards creating schools and communities where everyone feels a sense of belonging and value
