Legal Referral Service

Provided by Access Pro Bono Society of British Columbia

A free legal referral service that helps British Columbians find a suitable legal professional to resolve their legal problem, or alternatively points them to helpful resources.
The Legal Referral Service connects British Columbians with lawyers, notaries, and designated paralegals who are well suited to assist with their legal needs. Participants are matched with legal professionals in their communities and provided with information about additional resources and services that may help address their legal issues.

Any BC resident can call 604-687-3221 or self-book online to receive a customized referral.

With a customized referral, there is an opportunity to consult with a lawyer, notary, or designated paralegal for a free 15 to 30 minute consultation. After the consultation, the client and the assigned legal professional may decide whether to work together on a paid basis. There is no obligation to retain the assigned legal professional after the consultation, and the referral service may be used as often as needed (new booking fees may apply).

Booking Fees:
  • Customized referrals made by phone, free for households with a total annual income under $100,000.
  • Customized referrals made by phone, $25 for households with a total annual income over $100,000
  • If the 24/7 online self-booking service was used, there is a $25 booking fee for a customized referral.
The modest booking helps to offset the costs of LRS operations. The booking fee does not guarantee that the assigned legal professional will take the case. Referrals are provided only to licensed legal professionals on the BC-wide roster. Any working relationship between the client and the lawyer, notary, or designated paralegal is privileged and separate from LRS.

LRS is not a pro bono (free) legal service. While the initial consultation is free, British Columbians are connected with fee-charging lawyers, notaries, and paralegals for affordable legal assistance.
