Respiratory Therapy - Island Health Community Health Services (CHS)

The program provides in-home and virtual respiratory therapy services to clients across the Island Health region.
Community Respiratory Therapy provides assessment, education, and care planning for patients with chronic or complex respiratory conditions affecting breathing, function, or ability to manage symptoms at home.
Respiratory Therapy may be appropriate for patients who require support with:
  • COPD, asthma, interstitial lung disease, bronchiectasis, or other chronic respiratory conditions
  • Tracheostomy, laryngectomy, or ventilated client support
  • Respiratory assessment and care planning related to neuromuscular disease, including ALS, MS, or muscular dystrophy
  • Medication and inhaler review, respiratory education, and symptom monitoring
  • Strategies to support symptom recognition and safe management at home
Eligibility
  • Patient must be a Canadian citizen, or have permanent resident status
  • Patient must be a resident of British Columbia
  • Eligibility depends on health conditions, existing supports, and care needs.
How to Access:

Access starts through the Community Access Centres using a central intake and assessment process. During this process, a clinician will assess eligibility, clinical need, and function to determine if community respiratory therapy is appropriate. Services vary by location.
