Provided by Canadian Deafblind Association - BC Chapter
Early Intervention Program: Program supports children with deafblindness (birth to age five), their families, and teams. It offers family-focused support at home, daycare and preschool. To further support the program, the BC Chapter has developed a number of resources, including an information library, tele and video conferences and informational worksheets.
Intervention Program: Provides intervention services to deafblind children and youth while school is not in session. The program helps students practice their communication and social skills and maintain the skills gained during the school year. The program is run during school spring, summer and winter breaks. Intervenors are hired by families and trained by a deafblind specialist hired by the association.
Summer Recreation Program: Program supports the children and their families, but it also offers support for Intervenors by providing them with the opportunity to learn more about Intervention and connect with other Intervenors. Some of the activities include Science World, the Vancouver Aquarium, Maplewood Farm, days at the park, and bowling fun. Activities are scheduled in the summer months (July and August).
Virtual Recreation Program Provides opportunities for individuals with deafblindness, their Intervenors, and families to come together virtually to sing, share and create. Supports all children and youth with deafblindness, ages 2 – 19 years, with their Intervenors and/or family members.
Hospital Intervention Services Program (HISP): Provides the services of an intervenor that helps with the communication of information between deafblind clients, their families and the medical staff in a hospital setting. Intervenors also provide resources for related issues or services and are equipped with toys and games to meet the deafblind individual’s needs and ensure that his or her hospital stay is as pleasant as possible under the circumstances. Sensory Clinics: Provides networking, educational and training experience for the parents, the children with deafblindness, the siblings, and the Intervenors. Intervenors work with the children experiencing novel activities such as the resonance board and the sensory tent, along with switch activities. Parents connect with other parents and Intervenors.
Educational Sessions: During weekend-long Sensory Clinics, the parents participate in educational sessions and Parent Panels. Parents have the opportunity to ask direct questions about their own child’s vision and hearing.
Membership: Annual membership fee $30 per person, or $35 per family.
