Family and Child Programs

Child Services, Family / Parenting, Indigenous Services, and Pregnancy Care

Provided by Kootenay Kids Society

Delivers a wide range of programs and services for young children, a range of parent education programs, and opportunities for families to meet socially and connect with each other.
The following programs are offered:
  • Indigenous Family Support: The Indigenous Family Support program provides support for families and children ages 0–6 who self-identify as First Nations, Métis or Inuit. The program includes family gatherings, traditional parenting programs and one on one support for families in need.
  • Family Place: The Family Place provides children focused programs and support services to families with young children, including during pregnancy. They offer a variety of playgroups, parenting support and education, peer support groups, Dad’s programming, pregnancy outreach programs, special events, a food cupboard and children’s clothes closet. All services are free, most have snacks or meals, and childminding is available for all children ages 1-5 years.
  • Strong Start: Strong Start is a free early learning program for pre-school children 0–5 years old and their parents, grandparents or caregivers. It offers today’s families an opportunity to provide their young children with problem-solving skills and the social skills that will help them successfully manage in school or within the community. Strong Start programs are accessible in Nelson and Crawford Bay. To register, please go to the SD8 Kootenay Lake website and fill in the online registration form, or drop in during the program time and speak to the facilitator for more options when you arrive.
